deepmind Tinker — previously known as DeepMining — is a very basic but conceptually well thought out serious sound design startup bank for all the lovely Behringer DeepMind synthesizers.
The idea here is that you need somewhere to begin, and it needs to begin with the true analog core engine of the machine.
We went through the presets of course but we were shocked, appalled and desperately unhappy finding that all of the presets are more or less horrible: This is not a disbelief in Behringer’s hardware design craftsmanship, but a reaction to how they directed their sound design teams. You see, it is pretty obvious to us that the notion was “We need 1000 extreme sounds showcasing every effect unit maximization there is on this planet”.
And when it comes to planets, we belong on Venus, overlooking Jupiter and Juno as well as Planet P and Planet S. Roland corporation heritage? Oh yes.
We believe DeepMind should be Deeply proud of its very fine original Roland Juno 106 design concepts. And how versatile the dual oscillator construction is, with abilities to reach Prophet 5 and Oberheim tonal qualities. The second thing is that DeepMind 12 is a 12-voice synthesizer, which is too luxurious not to take advantage of. When put in its double or even triple voice modes, this instrument is capable of giving you the glorious sound of multitracking right out of the box. We found none of the presets to be utilizing this. At last not in obviously apparent ways.
So in this way we can write a long story of this very small sound bank seen to numbers. It’s not about numbers at all. It’s about the very right settings. Get this bank, forget the presets and you will end up in the core heaven of the Deepmind series.
